Piteå has an explicit goal of becoming Sweden's most child-friendly municipality, and we have already made good progress.
Piteå's schools maintain high quality, appearing among the top rankings in Sweden's national Best Municipality for Schools survey for many years. We invest in the people who make our schools great – the pupils, the teachers and the school leaders. Together, we are creating sustainable schools for the future, based on educational research and lifelong learning.
The broad offering at our music and dance school gives pupils the opportunity to complement their schooling with music and dance lessons.
Piteå's town center is both picturesque and compact, with water on three sides. It has a unique square from the 1600s surrounded by buildings clearly reflecting its history – small wooden townhouses. The old Norrmalm district also has a story to tell.
The municipality is expansive, with the countryside being an important part of Piteå. The municipality stretches across an area of about 31 square kilometers, somewhat smaller than Gotland but considerably larger than Luxembourg, and also has about 40 villages where some 40 percent of the municipality's population resides. Here we find thriving rural businesses, a high quality of life and plenty of room to breathe. On average, each Piteå resident has 13.7 square kilometers at their disposal.
